Edo orders reopening of schools closed over security threat

The Edo State Government has announced that schools temporarily shut down over security concerns in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area will resume academic activities on Monday, June 15, 2026.

The decision was conveyed in a circular issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Enodolomwanyi Otamere, following a review of the security situation in the affected communities.

The schools were closed earlier this week after intelligence reports allegedly indicated a possible threat of attacks and mass abduction targeting some educational institutions in the area. The affected schools include Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.

According to the government, extensive consultations with security agencies and other stakeholders showed that the situation had improved sufficiently for schools to reopen.

«“Following a comprehensive assessment of the security environment, the government is satisfied that adequate measures have been put in place to safeguard students, teachers, and other school personnel,” the circular stated.

The government disclosed that additional security arrangements and monitoring mechanisms had been deployed across the affected communities and schools to ensure a safe learning environment.

As a result, both public and private schools affected by the closure order have been directed to resume normal academic and administrative activities from Monday.

“School administrators and proprietors are expected to make the necessary preparations for the safe return of learners and staff while maintaining close collaboration with security agencies, community leaders, and relevant government authorities,” the statement added.

The state government reassured parents and guardians that the safety of students remains a priority, noting that security agencies would continue to monitor developments and respond promptly to any emerging threats.

Authorities also urged parents to ensure their children return to school as scheduled to avoid further disruption to academic activities.

“Government remains committed to protecting lives, property, and the education sector. We encourage parents and guardians to support the resumption process by ensuring their wards return to school promptly,” the circular said.»

The directive takes effect on June 15, with all stakeholders instructed to comply fully and give the announcement wide publicity.
