The Coalition of Observer Groups in Nigeria has called for transparency and credibility in the electoral process as Edo State prepares for the August 16, 2025 by-elections in Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency.

The group expressed concerns that lingering distrust from the September 2024 governorship election makes it imperative for the Independent National Electoral Commission to improve its conduct.

In a statement signed by coalition leader Simon Diogu, the observers urged INEC to address potential irregularities and implement measures to safeguard the integrity of results collation.

The group emphasized that public trust in elections depends on transparent processes and called on security agencies, particularly the police, to maintain neutrality.

“The police must ensure that all political parties and their agents have lawful access to collation centres and that the environment remains peaceful and secure,” the statement said.

The coalition stressed that a non-intimidating atmosphere is essential for credible elections and reminded all stakeholders to comply with the Electoral Act.

The group also appealed to the Edo State government to guarantee voter safety, noting the special significance of Edo Central as Governor Godwin Obaseki’s home constituency.

“We urge the governor to demonstrate leadership by promoting peace and fairness during the elections, and to reassure all stakeholders of the government’s commitment to a level playing field,” the statement added.

Highlighting INEC’s responsibilities, the coalition stated: “INEC has both a legal and moral obligation to ensure that the will of the people is respected. Steps must be taken to ensure collation is open, verifiable, and protected from any undue influence.”

The August 16 polls represent a crucial test for INEC’s credibility, with both domestic and international observers monitoring the process closely. The coalition warned that the elections’ outcome will significantly impact public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system as the country prepares for future polls.
