Nigerian basketball sensation, Amy Okonkwo, has been selected in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 All-Star Team, following her standout performance for D’Tigress at the just-concluded tournament in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The announcement was made on Tuesday via the official X account of FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

Okonkwo was instrumental in Nigeria’s dominant run to a historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.

In a fiercely contested final against Mali, the 28-year-old forward delivered an outstanding performance, posting 19 points, nine rebounds, and three assists to guide Nigeria to a 78-64 victory.

With this triumph, D’Tigress secured their seventh African title, inching closer to Senegal’s record of 11 championship wins.

Her consistent brilliance throughout the tournament earned Okonkwo the Most Valuable Player award, her second straight MVP honour after also claiming the title at the 2023 edition in Kigali, Rwanda.

Okonkwo now joins an elite group of players named in the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket All-Star Five.

She is listed alongside Mali’s Sika Kone, Senegal’s Cierra Dillard, South Sudan’s Delicia Washington, and Uganda’s Jane Asinde.

A Flourishing Club Career

Born in California, USA, Okonkwo has built an impressive professional career across several countries.

After three seasons in Spain, she moved to the French league in 2022, signing with Saint-Amand. In her debut season in France, she averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game.

Her journey continued with stints in Israel and Mexico before joining Landerneau Bretagne Basket in 2023, where she emerged as the team’s top scorer, averaging 17 points and seven rebounds per game and playing a crucial role in helping them retain their top-flight status.

National Team Impact

Okonkwo first donned the green-and-white jersey for Nigeria at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she logged 2.7 points and one rebound per game.

She featured prominently in Nigeria’s victorious 2021 AfroBasket campaign, averaging 9.4 points and 4.2 rebounds.

In 2023, she played a pivotal role as D’Tigress claimed yet another AfroBasket title in Kigali, Rwanda, where she was also named tournament MVP.

With back-to-back MVP honours and now a spot in the 2025 All-Star Team, Amy Okonkwo continues to etch her name into the history books of African women’s basketball.
