Manchester United and England icon, David Beckham, has been knighted, earning one of Britain’s highest honours in King Charles’ Birthday Honours list.

The knighthood, which recognises his exceptional contributions to both sport and charity, marks a significant moment in Beckham’s life and illustrious career.

The Inter Miami co-owner has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2005 and, in 2024, became an ambassador for The King’s Foundation, a charitable initiative spearheaded by King Charles himself.

Reflecting on the honour, Beckham shared his gratitude in a heartfelt statement, “To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true,” he said.

“Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation.

“I’m so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I’m grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment.

“It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I’m immensely proud and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”

Beckham, who was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2003, won 115 caps for England, captaining the national team in 59 of those appearances.

He remains the only English male player to have scored in three different World Cups, representing the Three Lions in every major tournament between 1998 and 2006.

At club level, Beckham’s legacy includes six Premier League titles with Manchester United, part of the historic treble in 1999.

His career also spanned elite clubs like Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain before retiring in 2013. He also played a notable role in securing London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

Manchester United paid tribute to their former star on social media, stating, “Massive congratulations from everyone at United on this special achievement, Becks — you truly deserve this.”

The road to a knighthood wasn’t straightforward. Beckham was initially tipped for the honour in 2011 but was reportedly held back by issues raised by HM Revenue and Customs over alleged tax avoidance schemes.

In 2017, leaked emails, which his team insisted were “hacked,” “doctored,” and “private”, appeared to show Beckham criticising the honours system.

Alongside Beckham, several sports personalities also made the King’s Honours list.

Darts sensations Luke Littler and Luke Humphries were both awarded MBEs, as was former Lioness Rachel Daly, part of England’s historic Euro 2022 win who retired from international football in April 2024.

Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee received an OBE, and British tennis great Virginia Wade was honoured with a CBE.
