Nigerian chess champion and social entrepreneur, Tunde Onakoya, has announced that he will be stepping away from X, citing concerns for his mental and emotional well-being.

The founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Onakoya is widely recognized for using the strategic game of chess to uplift children in underprivileged communities across Nigeria.

Onakoya’s decision comes after months of grappling with the intense negativity often found on social media.

In a heartfelt post to his followers on Thursday night, he revealed that the constant exposure to online hostility had become overwhelming.

“This place has grown too heavy for me. As an empath, I feel too much darkness in the world pressing in. I’ll be stepping away for a while as I must guard my heart,” he wrote.

Over the years, Onakoya has turned chess into a tool for social change, teaching the game to thousands of children living in slums and marginalized areas.

His initiative, Chess in Slums Africa, has been celebrated for instilling discipline, critical thinking, and confidence in young learners, many of whom face significant socio-economic challenges.

The program has drawn international attention, with Onakoya speaking at conferences and events about the power of chess to transform lives.

In 2019, he made headlines when his students competed in international chess tournaments, showcasing not just talent but resilience in the face of adversity.

Onakoya’s work has also earned him recognition from global organizations dedicated to education and youth development, cementing his reputation as a leading figure in social entrepreneurship in Africa.

Despite these achievements, the constant scrutiny and sometimes harsh commentary on social media have taken a personal toll.

By taking a step back, Onakoya hopes to preserve his emotional health and recharge, emphasizing the importance of mental wellness even for those leading impactful initiatives.

He encouraged his followers and supporters to continue championing positive change in their own communities.

“I may be away from this space, but my mission remains. I trust the work we’ve started will continue to grow, and I hope to return refreshed, ready to keep making a difference,” Onakoya stressed.
