Okocha denies rumoured NFF presidency bid

Former Super Eagles skipper, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, has debunked speculations linking him to an ambition of contesting for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation.

The rumours gained traction after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, a result that fueled renewed calls for the Ibrahim Gusau-led NFF board to resign.

In the midst of the backlash, reports surfaced that Okocha was eyeing the position of NFF president.

However, the former midfield maestro and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations champion swiftly moved to dismiss the claims, urging those behind the reports to desist.

“Hello everyone, I just want to use this opportunity to say that the news and post that have been circulating is false,” Okocha stated. “I have not said or spoken to anyone about Nigerian football or any interest on becoming NFF president, I’m currently in Kigali attending SPORTSBIZAFRICA.

“So, I’m pleading with the people spreading false information to stop.

“I appreciate my people and understand the frustration we’re going through, but be rest assured that better days are ahead, let’s keep believing. I know that it is not easy but we are all in it together.

“God bless and please let’s stay strong.”

The Super Eagles’ qualification hopes remain in jeopardy, with the draw against South Africa leaving them six points adrift of the Group C leaders on 11 points, with just two fixtures remaining.

Nigeria will return to action in October when they face Lesotho and Benin Republic in matchdays 9 and 10.
