Celtic FC offers Iheanacho new contract, coach confirms

Kelechi Iheanacho has been offered a new contract by Celtic, manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed, as the Scottish champions intensify efforts to retain the Nigerian forward.

Iheanacho, 29, enjoyed an impressive spell at Parkhead last season, earning cult-hero status after scoring crucial goals that helped Celtic secure a domestic league and cup Double.

Despite attracting transfer interest from clubs in Brazil and Greece, the Nigerian international has reportedly been keen on extending his stay in Glasgow.

O’Neill revealed that Celtic have already presented Iheanacho with a contract proposal and are now awaiting the player’s decision.

“There’s an offer there to him at this minute. So we’ll see how that develops,” the Northern Irishman said.

The Celtic boss had earlier expressed his determination to keep Iheanacho at the club, stressing the importance of resolving the situation before the start of pre-season.

“If we can do something relatively quickly, at least he then gets started in pre-season, which is really important for him,” he said last week.

“I would like to have him. It would be nice. I’m definitely pursuing that at this minute and we are talking to his agent.”
