Super Eagles forward, Taiwo Awoniyi, opened his scoring account for Coventry City in impressive fashion, netting a goal and providing an assist as they defeated Plymouth Argyle 4-2 away from home in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
The Nigerian striker needed just three minutes to make an impact, finishing off a pass from Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi to give Coventry an early lead.
Awoniyi turned provider two minutes later, setting up Jack Rudoni to double Coventry’s advantage in the fifth minute.
Plymouth, however, fought back before half-time, with Oliver Irow pulling one goal back in the 21st minute before Xavier Amaechi restored parity to make it 2-2.
Coventry regained control after the break when Ephron Mason-Clark struck in the 67th minute to put the visitors back in front.
Peter Torp then sealed the victory from the penalty spot 12 minutes from time, sending Frank Lampard’s side into the third round with a 4-2 win.
The appearance was Awoniyi’s second for Coventry since joining the newly promoted Premier League club from Nottingham Forest for a reported £9 million after four seasons at the City Ground.
His Nigeria teammate Frank Onyeka was not involved, having been left out of Coventry’s matchday squad.
