Cameroon’s goalkeeping coach, Carlos Kameni, has backed Andre Onana’s move to Turkish giants Trabzonspor, describing it as a wise step in revitalizing his career.
Onana sealed a loan switch from Manchester United and marked his debut against Fenerbahce with a mixed display gifting a goal through an early mistake before bouncing back to earn man-of-the-match honours in a narrow defeat.
Speaking to Africa Foot, Kameni stressed that the decision will allow the 28-year-old to escape the intense spotlight he faced in England.
“It’s the right move. Things weren’t going well for Andre at Manchester United,” Kameni explained. “He was often criticised last season, and this campaign he hardly featured, just one cup appearance. Everyone knew he risked spending more time on the bench or even out of the squad.”
The former Cameroon international added that regular game time in Turkey will serve Onana better than sitting on the sidelines at Old Trafford.
“I told him he made the right call. It’s always better to be a starter at a strong club in a good league than remain a substitute at a top club in a tougher league. At Trabzonspor, he will still be under scrutiny because he’s a quality goalkeeper, but the pressure won’t be as suffocating as it was at United.”
