British national arrested over US Air Force base incident

A 22-year-old British national has been arrested in connection with an incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, the United Kingdom’s counter-terrorism police said on Tuesday.

The man was arrested in Westminster, London, on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts, bringing the number of people arrested over the incident to seven.

According to the police, the investigation remains ongoing, with Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, Vicki Evans, saying it “remains a live investigation” as officers continue to “pursue multiple lines of enquiry”.

The incident occurred on September 27, when a major incident was declared after police were alerted to three “suspicious vehicles” near the airbase. Dozens of homes were subsequently evacuated.

Five men, aged between 23 and 25, were arrested near the base in the early hours of September 27 after vehicles were reported to be travelling towards the facility.

The men were initially arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.

They were subsequently released on police bail in what police described as an “investigative decision” that was “grounded in experience and strategy”.

A sixth suspect, a 25-year-old dual Iranian-British national, was arrested in Westminster on October 1 and was also later released on bail.
