Bauchi confirms employment of late Channels TV cameraman’s wife

The Bauchi State Government has officially confirmed the employment of Mrs. Sara Halilu, widow of late Channels Television cameraman, Ben Kani, fulfilling a promise earlier made to support his family.

In a statement released by the Information Officer of the State Civil Service Commission, Saleh Umar, the government said Halilu’s appointment had been regularised in line with the appropriate civil service structure.

According to Umar, “Mrs. Halilu’s appointment has been adjusted to the position of Registrar II, Cooperative Society, to reflect the correct scheme of service, following an earlier placement as Cooperative Officer II.”

He explained that the decision was part of efforts by the state government to honour its commitment to the deceased’s family.

“The gesture is in fulfilment of the pledge made by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed to support the family of the late cameraman, who died in active service,” Umar added.

Kani lost his life while on official duty during the commissioning of projects executed by the North East Development Commission in Alkaleri Local Government Area.

He was among two journalists who died in a road accident involving a convoy of media personnel covering the event.

The state government had earlier assured the family of its support, describing the move as a compassionate response to Kani’s service and sacrifice.

Meanwhile, the commission also approved a series of promotions and appointments across the state civil service during its 10th plenary session held on March 24, 2026.

Umar disclosed that “ten Deputy Directors on Grade Level 15 have been promoted to substantive Directors on Grade Level 16, following the governor’s approval.”

He added that several departments benefited from the exercise, including Commercial, Sports, Monitoring and Compliance, Engineering, News and Current Affairs, and Administration.

“In addition, three Deputy Directors have been elevated to Director level in key areas such as Donor and Technical Coordination, Planning, and Water Supply,” he said.

Other beneficiaries, according to the statement, include Confidential Secretaries, architects, works superintendents, and fire service personnel.

Umar further noted that two officers were re-engaged on a two-year contract basis effective March 1, 2026.

“The appointments and promotions are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the state civil service and improve efficiency in service delivery,” he said.
