Bandit attacks displace thousands in Sokoto, says NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency says recent bandit incursions in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State have forced thousands of residents from their homes, as insecurity continues to worsen across affected communities.

The agency disclosed this in a statement shared on Wednesday via its official X handle, following an on-the-spot assessment conducted by its Sokoto Operations Office on people affected by the violence.

The evaluation was carried out after a series of attacks recorded on June 7 and 9, 2026, in Dan Gulbi community, where several residents were reportedly killed during raids by armed bandits.

According to NEMA, its findings indicated large-scale displacement across multiple communities, with many affected persons now seeking shelter in public buildings and nearby settlements.

“Findings from the assessment revealed that the recurring attacks have displaced thousands of residents, forcing them to flee their homes in search of safety,” the agency said.

The agency further explained that many displaced residents are currently taking refuge in Tureta town, particularly at JNI Primary School and Abdulbaki Model Primary School. Others, it said, have relocated to Tsamiya Ward, Duma Ward, and surrounding communities within Tureta Local Government Area.

It also noted that some victims have crossed into Zamfara State, where they are now staying in Gummi Local Government Area.

During the same assessment, officials received reports of another attack in Achi Asha Ruwa community, which reportedly resulted in additional casualties.

“The assessment further indicated that thousands of people have been affected by the violence, with some individuals sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

“Several shops and means of livelihood were also reportedly looted and destroyed during the attacks, worsening the humanitarian situation in the affected communities,” it stated.

NEMA added that limited access to some of the affected locations is hampering both assessment and response efforts, due to ongoing security concerns in the area.

“The assessment team observed that access to several affected locations remains difficult due to the prevailing security challenges, posing significant constraints to humanitarian assessment and response operations,” NEMA said.

The agency said it is collaborating with relevant stakeholders and security agencies to fully assess the impact of the attacks and coordinate humanitarian support for those affected.
