Nigerian music star Ayra Starr has emerged as the Best International Act at the 2025 BET Awards, a monumental win that cements her position as a rising global force in music.
The award ceremony, which took place on Sunday and was hosted by comedian and actor Kevin Hart, celebrated excellence across the entertainment industry with a special focus on Black talent and culture.
Ayra Starr triumphed over a competitive field that included South Africa’s Tyla, Ghanaian sensation Black Sherif, and fellow Nigerian hitmaker Rema.
“This is more than just an award for me — it’s a win for every African girl with a dream,” Ayra Starr said in her acceptance speech, her voice filled with emotion.
“I’m grateful to my fans around the world for believing in me and pushing me to this moment.”
Ayra Starr’s journey to BET recognition began in 2022, when she was first nominated in the Best New International Act category.
She continued to gain attention, securing a nomination for Best International Act in 2023 and the BET Her Award in 2024 for her empowering single “Commas.”
This year, she earned multiple nods, including Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act — ultimately clinching the latter.
Entertainment analyst Chuka Ekwe observed, “Ayra Starr’s win isn’t just a personal achievement — it reflects the rising influence of African artists globally. She’s setting a precedent for the next generation.”
Other notable winners at the event include Kendrick Lamar, who dominated the evening with four major awards, including Album of the Year for GNX, Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Best Collaboration with SZA for “Luther”, and Video of the Year for “Not Like Us.”
SZA took home the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist award, while Chris Brown was named Best Male R&B/Pop Artist. Rising talent Leon Thomas secured the Best New Artist accolade, and Blue Ivy Carter won the YoungStars Award.
The night also honoured achievements beyond music. Cynthia Erivo and Denzel Washington were recognized as Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively, while “Luther: Never Too Much” was named Best Movie.
