Nottingham Forest manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, has provided a cautiously optimistic update on striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, who was recently placed in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery for an abdominal injury.
The 27-year-old Nigerian international sustained the injury during a 2-2 Premier League clash with Leicester City, having collided with a goalpost during the match at the City Ground last Sunday.
He was rushed to the hospital the following day.
Offering insight into Awoniyi’s condition during his Friday press briefing, Nuno stated, “He went to surgery, surgery went well, thank God. He is under observation now, but he is recovering. We still have to wait for the doctors to allow visits.”
Nuno acknowledged the emotional toll the incident has taken on the team. “We are concerned but it is positive. It has been very difficult because of the concern of the injury, the situation he went through,” he said.
“It’s been very difficult, very difficult on us and on everybody, the concern of the injury that he had, the situation that he entered through, it’s been hard on us.”
Following the draw with Leicester, Forest now sit seventh in the Premier League standings with two fixtures remaining.
While they have secured a spot in European competition, their chances of breaking into the top five for Champions League qualification remain slim ahead of Sunday’s away match against West Ham.
