Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the opposition party.

Atiku’s resignation letter was seen on Wednesday, with confirmation provided by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe.

The development follows Atiku’s recent political realignment, where he formed a coalition under the African Democratic Congress alongside prominent opposition figures.

The coalition includes: Peter Obi (2023 Labour Party presidential candidate); Rotimi Amaechi (Former Minister of Transportation); Nasir el-Rufai (Former Kaduna State Governor).

This strategic alliance aims to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. Atiku’s departure from the PDP, where he served as the party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2019 and 2023 elections, marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

The resignation letter, dated Wednesday, did not specify reasons for Atiku’s exit but comes three weeks after the ADC coalition’s formation. Political analysts suggest this move signals Atiku’s commitment to the new opposition alliance and potentially sets the stage for a unified challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress in the next presidential election.
