A political scientist, Akande Olakunle, has issued a caution to the ruling All Progressives Congress, urging the party to avoid the pitfalls that led to the downfall of the People’s Democratic Party in 2015.

In an open letter made available to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Akande acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bold and transformative leadership style while commending his efforts to revive Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape amidst the challenges of 2023.

Akande emphasized that for Tinubu’s initiatives to translate into meaningful development, there must be accountability and strategic governance at all levels of leadership.

He stated, “APC must not forget the PDP’s mistake. As more individuals align with the ruling party, it’s important to recognize that many are motivated by self-interest rather than genuine commitment to party growth or public service.”

While acknowledging that Tinubu’s leadership has inspired renewed confidence and attracted new members to the APC, Akande warned against complacency.

“There’s no doubt that President Tinubu’s leadership style has inspired renewed confidence, resulting in many individuals joining the All Progressives Congress (APC). Yet, the party must tread cautiously,” he wrote.

He drew parallels with the PDP’s decline, noting that the former ruling party once enjoyed absolute confidence but was eventually voted out due to its failure to prioritize the people’s wellbeing.

Expressing concern over the growing influx of members driven by personal gain rather than national progress, Akande described the trend as dangerous for a party striving to reform Nigeria and secure its legacy.

“This is dangerous for a party that is working hard to reform Nigeria and secure its legacy. The APC must rise above internal opportunism and focus on quality representation,” he cautioned.

Akande stressed that while Tinubu’s efforts at the federal level are commendable, the party’s overall success hinges on the quality of leadership at all levels. He urged APC leaders to implement internal reforms, prioritize integrity in candidate selection, and resist being influenced solely by wealth or political clout.
