Atalanta sack coach after poor Serie A start

Atalanta have parted ways with Croatian coach Ivan Juric following consecutive Serie A defeats that have left the team struggling in the league’s lower half, the club confirmed on Monday.

The latest setback came on Sunday when Atalanta suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Sassuolo, a result that dropped them to 13th in the Serie A standings.

Despite a strong start to the season, which included a nine-match unbeaten run, seven of them draws, Atalanta faltered in recent matches, losing to Udinese and Sassuolo.

In a statement, the club confirmed that Juric, along with his coaching staff, had been dismissed.

Juric’s recent coaching history has been turbulent. He lasted less than two months at Roma last year and then took charge at English side Southampton, stepping down when the Saints became the earliest team ever to be relegated from the Premier League in early April.

He had taken over at Atalanta following the departure of highly successful former boss Gian Piero Gasperini, who moved to Roma in the summer after nine years at the helm.

While domestic results have disappointed, Atalanta have enjoyed a relatively better run in Europe, sitting 16th in the Champions League group with seven points from four matches.
