Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, following a sea pirate attack along the Nigeria–Cameroon waterways.
The rescue followed a boat hijacking incident that occurred on January 11, 2026, around the Kombo Fishing Port axis within Cameroonian waters, where suspected sea pirates abducted passengers travelling from Cameroon to Nigeria.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 13 Brigade, Major Yemi Sokoya, said the attackers operated multiple boats during the operation.
“A distress call was received indicating that suspected sea pirates, operating two speedboats and a wooden boat, hijacked a passenger vessel moving from Cameroon to Nigeria,” Sokoya said.
“The passengers were abducted around the Kombo Fishing Port area within Cameroon waterways.”
He explained that troops stationed at Ikang responded swiftly to the distress alert and pursued the assailants.
“Troops of 13 Brigade deployed at Ikang immediately moved to the scene. During the pursuit, there was an exchange of fire which led to one of the pirates’ speedboats capsizing,” he said.
“The criminals abandoned their victims and fled into the surrounding creeks.”
According to the Army, all 18 passengers, including two infants, were rescued without injuries.
Commending the troops for their action, the Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General P. O. Alimikhena, described the operation as a demonstration of professionalism and courage.
“This successful rescue operation reflects the bravery, professionalism and unwavering commitment of our officers and soldiers to protecting lives and securing our waterways,” Alimikhena said.
“We will continue to dominate our operational environment and ensure that criminal elements have no safe haven.”
The brigade commander also called on residents of border communities to support security efforts by sharing timely and credible information.
“Community cooperation remains vital to sustaining security across Cross River State and adjoining waterways,” he added.
The Army said the operation underscores its resolve to safeguard lives and maintain security along strategic waterways in the region.
