Army launches social media campaign to boost personnel cybersecurity

The Nigerian Army on Tuesday began a three-day social media awareness campaign aimed at enhancing cybersecurity consciousness and promoting responsible online behaviour among its personnel.

The programme, organised by the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, is taking place at the Lt.-Gen. T.A. Lagbaja Hall, Ribadu Cantonment, and is scheduled to run from March 24 to March 26.

Declaring the campaign open, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, said the initiative was designed to equip officers and soldiers with the skills needed to effectively navigate the digital environment.

He was represented at the event by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Administration, 1 Division, Col. Ikechukwu Akabike.

Wase noted that social media has become a powerful tool shaping public perception, influencing security dynamics, and affecting operational efficiency within the military.

He stated that “understanding both the benefits and risks of social media is essential for personnel in safeguarding national security and maintaining institutional integrity.”

According to him, the campaign will cover critical areas including the impact of social media on military operations, management of digital footprints, cybersecurity practices, and the role of online platforms in national defence.

“The Nigerian Army recognises that social media is a double-edged sword. While it creates opportunities for communication and intelligence gathering, it also presents serious risks if not properly managed,” he said.

Wase urged participants to actively engage in the sessions, interact with resource persons, and utilise the knowledge gained to improve their professional competence.

He also commended the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command for its proactive approach in promoting digital awareness and responsible use of social media within the force.

The GOC emphasised the importance of continuous learning in response to evolving digital trends, expressing confidence that the campaign would help build a more informed, vigilant, and digitally resilient military.

The initiative forms part of the Nigerian Army’s broader efforts to integrate modern cyber strategies into its operations and strengthen national security through improved digital awareness.
