Army condemns killing of five soldiers in Abia

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the detention of Private Christopher Emmanuel following allegations that he physically assaulted a female vendor, identified as Doshima, in Kula community, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to a statement released on Sunday by Capt. Abdullahi Osabo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of the 401 Special Forces Brigade, Makurdi, the alleged incident occurred on May 6 and came to the attention of military authorities on May 8.

Preliminary reports suggest the altercation may have arisen from a dispute over an unsettled debt. The soldier reportedly claimed the woman insulted him during a phone conversation, which allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation.

“Private Christopher Emmanuel is currently in custody, and a thorough investigation is underway to uncover the facts surrounding the incident,” Osabo stated.

He reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to upholding human rights, stressing that disciplinary action would be taken if the soldier is found culpable.

“The Nigerian Army maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards indiscipline and human rights violations. We assure the public and the victim that justice will be served,” he added.

Osabo also urged citizens to report any misconduct by army personnel through the official Human Rights Desk helpline rather than turning to social media.

“All reported cases of abuse are treated with the utmost seriousness and investigated thoroughly,” he assured.

Operation Whirl Stroke, under whose command Emmanuel serves, also condemned the incident, pledging to maintain professionalism and accountability in its operations.
