A High Court in Neni, Anambra State, has sentenced one Nonso Anunuobi to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of multiple offences including conspiracy, armed robbery, kidnapping, and attempted murder.

The judgment, delivered by Justice G.C. Anulude, followed a prolonged trial marked by overwhelming evidence presented by the prosecution, led by Assistant Chief State Counsel, Fabian Okeke.

According to court records, the crime, filed under Charge No. NN/5C/2019, occurred in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area, when the convict and his gang ambushed a man identified as Aloysius Obidinma on his way back to Onitsha from his village. The victim was assaulted, shot, and forcibly taken into the gang’s vehicle. He was later robbed of his car, phones, laptop, and other valuables before a ransom demand was issued to his family.

The police tracked the gang through one of the stolen items, which led to Anunuobi’s arrest and eventual arraignment.

During proceedings, the prosecution urged the court to impose the maximum penalty, reminding the bench that armed robbery under Nigerian law ordinarily attracts a death sentence. However, the defence appealed for leniency, citing mitigating factors.

Delivering judgment, Justice Anulude stated, “The court finds the defendant guilty as charged. While the law permits the death penalty in cases of armed robbery, the court has taken into account the appeal for mercy and other extenuating circumstances.”

He added, “This act of cruelty cannot be ignored. The sentence of life imprisonment is appropriate, and it should send a clear message to others with similar intentions.”

Reacting to the verdict, Fabian Okeke said the judgment reinforces the state’s commitment to justice and the fight against violent crime.

“This outcome demonstrates that there is no safe haven for criminal elements in Anambra State. The judiciary, law enforcement, and citizens must continue to work together to ensure a safer society,” he said.

The court’s ruling is expected to serve as a deterrent to individuals engaging in kidnapping and armed robbery, particularly in a region facing increasing concerns over public safety.
