The Nigerian Army has confirmed multiple suicide bomb explosions in Maiduguri, stating that troops have intensified surveillance and counter-terrorism operations to prevent further attacks across the city.
The incidents, which occurred around 7:05 p.m. on Monday, were carried out by suspected Boko Haram insurgents at three busy locations—the Post Office area, Monday Market axis, and near the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital—during Iftar.
In a statement, the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, said troops, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team and other security agencies, responded swiftly to secure the affected areas.
“Troops and other security agencies immediately cordoned off the locations to prevent further harm, while emergency responders evacuated casualties for urgent medical attention,” he said.
Emergency teams, including personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency and medical workers, transported injured victims to the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The Army disclosed that preliminary intelligence indicates the possibility of multiple suicide bombers being deployed into the metropolis to carry out coordinated attacks.
“Security forces have intensified surveillance, patrols, and counter-IED measures across the metropolis to track down any remaining suspects and prevent further attacks,” Uba added.
Residents have been urged to stay vigilant, avoid crowded areas where possible, and report suspicious movements or unattended items to security agencies.
“Members of the public are advised to remain calm but alert and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to safeguard lives and property,” he said.
The military also commiserated with families of victims, assuring that operations are ongoing to bring those responsible to justice.
