Aribo, Onyekuru lead clubless Nigerian players ahead new season

Super Eagles midfielder, Joe Aribo, leads the list of Nigerian internationals still without clubs as preparations for the 2026/27 season gather pace, with Henry Onyekuru, Peter Olayinka and Josh Maja also searching for new employers.

Aribo became a free agent after Southampton opted against extending his contract.

The 30-year-old midfielder, who spent part of his time with the Saints on loan at Leicester City, is now weighing up his next move.

The former Rangers and Charlton Athletic player remains an attractive option for prospective clubs due to his versatility, having featured in both midfield and attacking roles during spells in the Premier League and the Scottish Premiership.

Onyekuru is also back on the market after parting ways with Turkish side Genclerbirligi by mutual consent. As part of the agreement, the 29-year-old is expected to receive a settlement worth about €940,000.

The winger endured a disappointing campaign in Turkey, failing to record a goal or an assist in 19 league appearances after arriving from Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Fayha in the summer of 2025. Earlier in his career, he enjoyed successful spells with Galatasaray, where he won the Turkish Super Lig title, as well as Everton, Anderlecht and Monaco.

Forward Peter Olayinka is another Nigerian international seeking a fresh challenge after leaving APOEL Nicosia. The 30-year-old, who previously featured for Red Star Belgrade, Slavia Prague and Zulte Waregem, has reportedly attracted interest from clubs in Turkey, Belgium and Slovakia.

Striker David Okereke is assessing his options following the expiration of his contract with Italian side Cremonese.

The former Club Brugge forward is currently in discussions with Serie B club Sampdoria as he aims to relaunch his career after an underwhelming spell that ended with Cremonese’s relegation.

William Agada is likewise available after his short stay at Spanish club Real Zaragoza came to an end. Reports suggest the striker is close to sealing a return to Israel’s Ligat Ha’Al, where he previously impressed before moving to Major League Soccer.

Midfielder Okechukwu Azubuike, a key member of Nigeria’s bronze medal-winning team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, is also without a club after leaving Turkish side Erzurumspor and is believed to be considering opportunities in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Josh Maja remains a free agent following the end of his contract with West Bromwich Albion.
