The historic city of Oyo came alive on Sunday as political leaders and traditional rulers gathered at the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, for the installation of new high-ranking chiefs.
Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, arrived at the palace with his wife, Layal, ahead of his installation as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland.
The title, which translates roughly as “beloved child” or “one dear to the hearts of the Yoruba people,” is viewed as a mark of honour and a call to preserve Yoruba values, unity, and cultural heritage.
Also present for the ceremony was Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari, former governor of Zamfara State, who is expected to receive the Obaloyin of Yorubaland title. Yari arrived with a delegation of northern senators and political associates.
Speaking on the significance of the Obaloyin title, the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, said: “The Obaloyin title represents love, compassion, justice, and serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.”
Palace sources explained that the titles come with responsibilities beyond ceremonial recognition.
“Both chiefs are expected to promote Yoruba culture, advise the Alaafin, strengthen unity among the people, and support education and social welfare initiatives,” a source at the palace said.
Videos shared on social media captured preparations at the palace, with several prominent figures in attendance, including former Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje, lawmakers, and numerous traditional rulers from across Nigeria.
The installation ceremonies are ongoing, with the palace buzzing with activities marking the historic event.
