AfroBasket: You’ve made Nigeria proud, Peter Obi hails D’Tigress

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, Mr. Peter Obi, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.

D’Tigress claimed their seventh continental crown after overpowering Mali 78–64 in a thrilling final held on Sunday night at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

In a post shared via his official X handle on Monday, Obi, who once governed Anambra State, praised the team’s outstanding performance, likening them to “true queens of the court.”

“Congratulations D’TIGRESS, you did it, you played like true queens of the court, fearless, fast, and unstoppable,” he wrote.

He commended the team for etching their names into the annals of African basketball history with five consecutive championship titles.

“Again, you’ve made Nigeria proud, you’ve made Africa proud, and you’ve made history by being the AfroBasket champions 5 times in a row.”

Addressing the players directly, Obi expressed gratitude for their passion and commitment to excellence.

“To the players, thank you for giving us your absolute best, for pouring your heart into every game, and for showing the world what Nigerian excellence looks like. Your prowess on the court was exceptional.”

He also acknowledged the efforts of Head Coach Rena Wakama, praising her leadership and winning mindset.

“To Coach Rena Wakama, thank you for your leadership, strategy, and belief in this team, you guided them like a true champion maker,” Obi added.
