Former Nigerian international, Sam Sodje, has raised concerns over Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s choice to call up 54 players for the upcoming training camp ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Sodje’s reaction came after Chelle released his provisional squad for the 35th AFCON finals in Morocco.

The three-time champions of Africa are set to face Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in Group C, aiming to mount a strong challenge in the tournament.

Nigeria’s training camp is scheduled to begin in Egypt on December 10, where the team is expected to engage in warm-up matches before the competition kicks off on December 21.

Speaking with Brila FM, Sodje questioned Chelle’s decision to summon such a large pool of players given the limited preparation time.

“I don’t really understand the reason for the list, it’s confusing you call some regular players and new ones but I don’t understand the reason for the 54 man list.

“Why are you doing that? We have to be positive to see how we can go.”
