AFCON Qualifier: Gambia shock Ghana 4-2

The Gambia came from two goals down to beat Ghana 4-2 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, securing their first victory over the Black Stars in 33 years in an Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifier.

Ghana took control early, with Ernest Nuamah converting a 27th-minute penalty before Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the hosts’ advantage six minutes later.

The Gambia responded quickly, as Mohamed Badamosi pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 37th minute.

Omar Colley then restored parity five minutes later to send the teams into the break level at 2-2.

Colley completed the visitors’ turnaround after the restart, taking advantage of a defensive error by Gideon Mensah to put The Gambia ahead for the first time.

Ghana pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were unable to break through The Gambia’s defence.

Colley completed his hat-trick in the second minute of stoppage time to seal a remarkable 4-2 victory for the visitors.

The result gives The Gambia six points from their opening two Group C qualifying matches, while Ghana have lost both games and are yet to register a point.
