AFCON Qualifier: Egypt thrash South Sudan 5-0

Egypt recorded a commanding 5-0 victory over South Sudan in their second 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at the Juba National Stadium on Tuesday.

The Pharaohs, who began their campaign with a goalless draw against Angola, took the lead in the 36th minute when Mostafa Zico converted Ahmed Fattouh’s cross from the left.

Omar Marmoush doubled Egypt’s advantage four minutes after the restart, collecting a long pass from Mohanad Lasheen behind the South Sudan defence before sending a low effort into the bottom corner.

Egypt continued to dominate and added a third goal in the 75th minute through Ibrahim Adel.

The forward raced clear after receiving Marwan Attia’s cross from inside the South Sudan half and beat the goalkeeper.

Marmoush completed his brace seven minutes later after receiving a cross inside the box, rounding the South Sudan goalkeeper and slotting the ball into an empty net.

Hamza Abdelkarim completed the rout in the first minute of stoppage time, reacting quickest after the goalkeeper saved Osama Faisal’s effort to convert the rebound.

The emphatic victory gives Egypt their first win of the qualifying campaign and puts them in a strong position as the race for a place at the 2027 AFCON continues.
