AFCON: Ivory Coast crush Burkina Faso 3-0, face Egypt in quarter-finals

Ivory Coast’s bid to retain the Africa Cup of Nations crown continued to gather pace after a commanding 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso in the round of 16, extending their strong recent run to six wins from their last eight internationals.

Burkina Faso registered the first effort on target when Saïdou Simporé tried his luck from distance, but his shot was comfortably handled by Yahia Fofana.

That moment briefly threatened the champions, yet it proved to be a false dawn as Ivory Coast soon seized control. Amad Diallo fired narrowly wide on two occasions, while skipper Franck Kessié also failed to keep his curling effort down.

There was a warning sign for Les Éléphants when Cyriaque Irié’s powerful low cross flashed across goal and just evaded Lassina Traoré, but Ivory Coast did not have to wait long to break the deadlock.

In the 20th minute, Evann Guessand muscled past Adamo Nagalo before slipping Amad through, and the winger showed great composure to lift the ball over Hervé Koffi. A brief VAR check confirmed the goal stood.

The holders soon doubled their lead as Amad turned provider, squaring for Yan Diomande, who made no mistake after Kessié cleverly dummied the pass.

Ivory Coast could have wrapped things up before the break, but Guessand hesitated after bursting into the area, while Burkina Faso came close to pulling one back when Dango Ouattara struck the woodwork.

Facing an uphill battle, Burkina Faso coach Brama Traoré made changes before half-time, withdrawing the booked Nagalo and introducing Blati Touré.

Georgi Minoungou followed early in the second half, yet the substitutions failed to spark a turnaround. Instead, Ivory Coast remained the more dangerous side, with Guéla Doué flicking just over from a Diomande free-kick.

Any lingering doubt was erased late on in spectacular fashion as teenage substitute Bazoumana Touré won possession deep in his own half, surged forward unchallenged and finished clinically to complete the scoring.

The victory sets up a blockbuster quarter-final against Egypt on Saturday for Emerse Faé’s men, while Burkina Faso bow out at the last-16 stage for the second tournament in a row.
