Alex Iwobi was instrumental in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Tanzania in their opening Group C match at AFCON 2025 on Tuesday, earning praise from the English Premier League.
The Fulham midfielder delivered two key assists as Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman found the back of the net for the Super Eagles. Iwobi’s exquisite cross set up Ajayi to give Nigeria an early first-half lead.
After Tanzania’s Kokola M’mombwa equalized, Iwobi again showcased his creativity, laying the ball perfectly for Lookman, whose left-foot strike restored Nigeria’s advantage.
The Premier League acknowledged his performance on X, posting, “Alex Iwobi shines for Nigeria 🇳🇬. The @FulhamFC star assisted both goals as the Super Eagles beat Tanzania 2-1 in their first match of AFCON 2025! ✨.”
Next, Iwobi and the Super Eagles will face Tunisia on Saturday, December 27, in Fes. The two sides previously met in the AFCON 2021 round of 16, where Tunisia won 1-0 and Iwobi received a straight red card.
Tunisia began their 2025 campaign strongly, defeating Uganda 3-1 in Rabat on Tuesday.
