The Confederation of African Football has opened a disciplinary investigation following violent scenes after Nigeria’s 2–0 AFCON 2025 quarter-final win over Algeria in Marrakech.
Although the Super Eagles advanced to the semi-finals, tensions flared both on the pitch and in the stands.
Algerian players surrounded referee Issa Sy and his assistants at the final whistle, disputing several decisions.
Security personnel intervened to prevent a full-scale confrontation, but heated exchanges threatened to escalate.
The turmoil extended into the spectator areas, with reports of frustrated Algerian fans attempting to breach barriers and vandalize parts of the stadium before stewards restored order.
Alarmingly, the unrest reached the journalists’ mixed zone, where multiple accounts indicate that some Algerian reporters verbally and physically confronted their Moroccan colleagues, raising concerns about safety even in controlled environments.
According to Africa Soccer, CAF is now reviewing statements from referees, security officials, and media representatives.
Disciplinary action is expected soon, with the governing body facing a crucial test in maintaining order and protecting the tournament’s integrity.
