AFCON: Amad fires champions I’Coast to 1-0 win over Mozambique

Defending champions Ivory Coast opened their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 1-0 win over Mozambique on Wednesday in Morocco.

Amad Diallo’s early second-half goal proved decisive, giving the Ivorians a winning start in Group F despite missing several clear opportunities to extend their lead.

The first half was a tight contest, with Ivory Coast struggling to break down a resolute Mozambique side.

However, they gained control after the break, and Diallo side-footed the ball into the net in the 49th minute under rainy conditions.

Despite creating numerous chances, the Ivorians were unable to increase their advantage.

Wilfried Zaha, recalled to the national team after more than two years, squandered multiple chances, while Franck Kessie saw two close-range attempts saved by Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan.

Substitute Vakoun Bayo also missed an easy header and later had a shot cleared off the line in the 89th minute.

Mozambique, appearing in their sixth Africa Cup of Nations finals, remain without a victory in the tournament since their debut in 1986, with a record of 12 losses and four draws.

Notably, the team fielded winger Dominguez at 42 years old, making him the oldest outfield player in the competition’s history, second only to former Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary.

Later on Wednesday, Cameroon and Gabon are set to face off in the other Group F fixture in Agadir.
