Former Minister of Interior and interim Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has declared that the party is positioned to defeat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, Ondo State capital, Aregbesola urged party members to set aside personal interests and differences to ensure the coalition’s success.
Aregbesola, a former ally of President Bola Tinubu and ex-governor of Osun State, emphasized that unity within the ADC would be crucial to unseating the current administration.
He stated: “The ADC has garnered significant support from prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who are backing the party as a coalition movement platform aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the next election.”
He called on members to focus on the broader goal, saying: “Let us work together, let us put personal interests aside and let’s get united. It is that unity we want, we should remember that we have many elections ahead, we have the presidential, the National Assembly and state assembly elections. We still have time but with a big task. If we unite, we won’t be defeated in the elections. Unity is very paramount in this situation.”
Aregbesola also encouraged undecided politicians to join the ADC, framing the 2027 election as a rescue mission for Nigeria.
He added: “Those still sitting on the fence should join the party in a bid to save the country from the precipice.”
Meanwhile, the ADC’s interim leadership reassured state chairmen of their inclusion in the coalition-building process, signaling efforts to consolidate opposition forces. Political economist Prof. Pat Utomi also endorsed the opposition coalition, reinforcing its growing momentum.
The ADC’s push for unity comes as key opposition figures, including Atiku and Obi, align with the party’s coalition strategy, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle ahead of 2027.
