Abuja elections: ADC’s Paul Moses concedes defeat

The African Democratic Congress candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council in the recently concluded Federal Capital Territory elections, Dr Paul Moses, has conceded defeat, effectively dimming prospects of any immediate legal challenge.

Under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, political parties retain the authority to sponsor candidates and ultimately determine whether to challenge the outcome of elections conducted under their platform.

While such decisions are often made in consultation with candidates, parties may still proceed to file petitions before the Election Tribunal panels even if a candidate is unwilling to contest the results.

In a rare move, however, Dr Paul Moses publicly accepted the outcome of the poll, signaling his decision not to pursue litigation.

The ADC flag bearer expressed appreciation to his supporters, campaign team, and residents of AMAC who, he said, believed in his vision.

His statement followed the final declaration of results by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The electoral body declared the incumbent AMAC Chairman, Honourable Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress, as the winner of the contest.

Dr Moses stated, “I accept the outcome of the election. Democracy demands respect for the will of the people, and I remain committed to the principles of peace, progress, and service,” he stated.

He, however, emphasized that the election marks not the end, but a continuation of his commitment to public service.

“This is not the end of the journey. Our movement for accountable leadership, inclusive governance, and sustainable development in AMAC remains strong. We will continue to engage, organize, and work towards a better future for our people,” he added.

Dr Paul Moses also urged his supporters to remain calm, focused, and united, assuring them that the ideals they championed throughout the campaign would not be abandoned.
