The Nigerian Medical Association, Abia State branch, has suspended its planned indefinite strike following the release of its kidnapped member, an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Uche Bonaventure Aguocha.
Dr Aguocha, a former chairman of the NMA in Abia State, was abducted on Sunday, May 26, 2026, and regained his freedom on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after spending nine days in captivity.
The association had earlier threatened to begin an indefinite industrial action from June 2 over his abduction. However, the strike was called off after confirmation of his release.
In a joint statement signed by the NMA State Chairman, Dr Ezenwa Ezuruike, and Secretary, Dr Clement Ifenkoronye, the association expressed relief over his safe return.
The statement read in part: “The Association expresses profound gratitude to the Government of Abia State… and all security agencies whose efforts contributed to securing his release.”
The NMA also acknowledged the role of security agencies and state governments in ensuring the doctor’s freedom, while thanking members of the public and health workers for their solidarity during the ordeal.
It further warned against the rising trend of attacks on healthcare workers, describing such incidents as unacceptable and harmful to the health system.
According to the association: “The kidnap of healthcare workers is unacceptable and must not become normalised.
The group also urged authorities to strengthen security around medical personnel and facilities, and called for the prosecution of those responsible for the abduction.
While celebrating Dr Aguocha’s release, the NMA expressed concern about the psychological and physical trauma suffered by victims of such attacks and wished him a speedy recovery.
