Everton have compounded Newcastle United’s Premier League struggles with a 1-0 victory at St James’ Park, increasing the pressure on manager Matthias Jaissle.
Thierno Barry scored the decisive goal early in the second half on Monday to secure three points for Everton, who moved up to seventh place in the league standings.
Newcastle, meanwhile, dropped to 13th after another disappointing performance.
The defeat marked Newcastle’s fourth loss in their last five matches across all competitions, with the club managing just two victories in their previous seven games.
Supporters expressed their frustration by booing the team and Jaissle at both half-time and the final whistle.
Jaissle, who took charge following Eddie Howe’s unexpected departure during the close season, has struggled to turn Newcastle’s fortunes around.
The former Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli manager now faces mounting pressure ahead of Saturday’s trip to fellow strugglers Fulham.
Everton’s winning goal came four minutes after the restart when Tyrique George’s effort was poorly handled by goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
The ball fell to Barry, who tapped it into the net.
Newcastle protested the goal, but a lengthy Video Assistant Referee review upheld the decision.
Newcastle came close to equalising through Anthony Elanga, whose close-range effort struck the post and rolled along the goal line before Everton cleared it.
Fabian Schar also squandered a promising opportunity, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford denied Yoane Wissa late in the game.
The hosts’ misery was completed in the closing moments when Jacob Ramsey received a red card after picking up two bookings within 60 seconds for fouls, including a crude challenge on Harrison Armstrong.
Barry’s goal was his eighth of the season and fourth in his last six appearances.
The victory also marked Everton’s second triumph over Newcastle in five days, following their 3-1 League Cup fourth-round success on Thursday.
Everton ended their two-match losing streak in the league after defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea, while the win was their first away league victory since February 28, when they also defeated Newcastle.
