Serie A: Bologna beat Monza 2-1 to extend winning run

Bologna secured their third consecutive Serie A victory after coming from behind to defeat Monza 2-1 at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara on Saturday, with goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski saving a late penalty to preserve the win.

The hosts fell behind in the sixth minute when Gustavo Varela converted from the penalty spot after Arthur Theate fouled Dany Mota Carvalho in the area.

Bologna responded with pressure as Jens Odgaard and Federico Bernardeschi came close to restoring parity.

Their persistence paid off in the 33rd minute when Tommaso Pobega connected with Juan Miranda’s corner to fire a superb volley into the net and level the score.

Bologna continued their attacking approach after the break and completed the turnaround in the 59th minute.

Following a VAR review, the referee awarded the hosts a penalty after Lorenzo Lucchesi pulled back Theate during an aerial challenge, allowing Bernardeschi to convert from the spot.

Monza were handed an opportunity to equalise in the 81st minute after another VAR review resulted in a penalty for a handball against Nadir Zortea.

However, Patrick Cutrone failed to capitalise as Skorupski produced an important save to deny him.

Cutrone threatened again in stoppage time, but the Bologna goalkeeper remained alert to preserve his side’s advantage.

Samuel Mbangula also missed a late opportunity to extend the lead after firing over the crossbar.

The victory marked Bologna’s first home win of the season and their first at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara since April.

They had previously recorded away victories over Cagliari and AC Milan, with the latter featuring a hat-trick from Samuel Mbangula.
