Four people have been arrested in connection with a shooting that left a police officer injured in Nottingham city centre, United Kingdom.
The arrests include a 27-year-old woman suspected of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, according to Nottinghamshire Police.
The incident occurred shortly before 04:50 BST on Sunday after the injured officer approached two individuals at a bus stop on Angel Row.
The male officer remains in hospital in a stable condition following the shooting.
However, Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden said on Monday that the injuries were not life-threatening but could have lasting consequences.
The three other suspects, comprising a 25-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, were arrested after police stopped a vehicle in the Radford area of Nottingham on Sunday evening.
Both were detained on suspicion of assisting an offender.
A fourth suspect, a 30-year-old man, was arrested in Bedfordshire in the early hours of Monday on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Detectives have confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Assistant Chief Constable Claire
Rukas said, “A team of experienced detectives continues to work tirelessly to establish exactly what happened before, during and after this appalling incident.
“I am pleased that four arrests have now been made and hope this provides some reassurance to the public as those detained are questioned in connection with the discharge of the firearm.”
Police have since removed the cordon that restricted access to Angel Row while officers conducted their investigations.
Rukas thanked residents, business owners and members of the public for their cooperation during the operation.
She also confirmed that the injured officer was receiving support from colleagues and loved ones.
“The injured officer continues to recover in hospital and is receiving support from colleagues and loved ones,” she said.
“We ask that his privacy is respected at this time.
“Our thoughts remain with him, and with his family, friends and colleagues, who have all been affected by this deeply shocking incident.”
Meanwhile, Nottingham East Labour MP Nadia Whittome told the BBC that she understood the officer had undergone surgery and was recovering.
She acknowledged that the incident could affect Nottingham’s reputation because of its past, but described the shooting as an extremely rare occurrence.
Whittome also praised members of the public who came forward to help following the incident in the early hours of Sunday.
She said, “This incident will no doubt will be damaging to the reputation of the city, especially because of our past, but I think that we also saw was an extremely rare incident that was the worst of our city.
“But we also saw the best of our city. At quarter to five on Sunday morning, people coming together doing everything that they could to assist and I think that we have to take comfort in that as well.”
The shooting has renewed attention on the risks faced by police officers while responding to suspicious activity.
Godden said the officer had been approaching two individuals when the incident occurred, highlighting the dangers associated with police duties.
Investigators are continuing to question the four suspects as they work to determine what happened before, during and after the shooting.
