The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has sealed shops at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos over the alleged production and distribution of fake and adulterated alcoholic drinks and wines.
According to Channels Television, the agency disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the operation was carried out following credible intelligence.
According to NAFDAC, its operatives discovered unhygienic production rooms where suspects allegedly bought empty bottles of expensive wines, replaced their original labels with counterfeit ones and refilled them with adulterated alcoholic beverages.
Photographs and videos from the operation showed empty bottles, fake labels and mixtures being prepared in unsanitary conditions, raising concerns about the potential health risks to consumers.
NAFDAC said several suspects were arrested during the raid.
The agency urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and assured the public of its commitment to protecting their health by ensuring that regulated products available in the market were safe for consumption.
It added that it conducts daily enforcement operations to remove fake and unwholesome regulated products from circulation.
The agency also reaffirmed its Director-General, Professor Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerians have access to wholesome food and safe, effective medicines.
NAFDAC warned individuals involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit and adulterated products to desist from the activities or face the full weight of the law.
It added that it would continue to pursue and prosecute offenders as part of efforts to safeguard public health.
