Galatasaray assistant coach, Ismael Garcia, has described Nigeria international Victor Osimhen as the ideal striker to exploit Barcelona’s high defensive line ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash between the two sides.
Garcia believes the Super Eagles forward’s pace, movement and attacking qualities could trouble the Spanish side, who are known for pushing their defensive line high up the pitch under head coach Hansi Flick.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper Diario Sport, as quoted by Barca Blaugranes, Garcia confirmed that Osimhen was fit and available for selection after returning from injury over the weekend.
“Yes, yes. I’m not going to tell you clichés or lies: he’s ready to play and he’s a completely differential player for us. Obviously, he’s there to play,” Garcia said.
The assistant coach added that Barcelona’s aggressive defensive approach could create opportunities for the Nigerian striker to exploit spaces behind their backline.
“And I’ll tell you more: the top players do well in every game, but perhaps, because of Barcelona’s way of defending, so aggressive and with the defensive line in the middle of the field, Osimhen is the striker who, due to his characteristics, is perfect against that type of defense,” he said.
“Beyond the fact that he is an extraordinary striker, we hope that he can do a lot of damage to Barcelona with the way he plays.”
Barcelona’s high defensive line is a key feature of Flick’s tactical approach, allowing his team to press opponents aggressively and maintain control of possession.
However, the strategy can leave spaces behind the defence for quick forwards to exploit.
Osimhen’s speed, ability to make runs behind defenders and threat in front of goal could therefore provide Galatasaray with an important attacking advantage in the encounter.
His return to fitness is also a boost for the Turkish champions, who are preparing for a challenging test against the Spanish giants in Europe’s elite club competition.
Barcelona head into the fixture following a 3-0 victory over Getafe in La Liga, while Galatasaray defeated Kasımpaşa 3-1 at the weekend to maintain their position at the top of the Turkish Super Lig.
The meeting offers Osimhen an opportunity to make an impact against Barcelona as Galatasaray seek a positive result in the Champions League.
