The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has warned members of the public against a fraudulent Facebook account allegedly impersonating its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Princewill Chike.

The university said the account was unauthorised and was being used to contact unsuspecting members of the public in the name of the Vice-Chancellor.

The Head of Information, Publications and Public Relations of the institution, Dr Sam Kpenu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday.

According to Kpenu, the Vice-Chancellor does not operate an active Facebook account, describing the impersonation as an attempt by fraudsters to deceive and extort unsuspecting individuals.

He cautioned members of the public against engaging with the operators of the account or responding to their messages.

“The university wishes to categorically state that the Vice-Chancellor does not operate a Facebook account; the account in question is unauthorised, and its operators have reportedly been sending messages to unsuspecting members of the public in his name,” the statement said.

Kpenu further warned the public against sending money, sharing sensitive personal or financial details, or engaging in transactions with the account operators.

He added that the university and its management should not be held responsible for activities carried out through the fraudulent account.

“The university dissociates the Vice-Chancellor and management from the account and any activities conducted through it,” the statement added.

The institution urged members of the public to report the account to Facebook and rely on its recognised communication channels for authentic information and official announcements.
