Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the appointment of Professor Tomola Obamuyi as the new Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko.
The appointment followed the recommendation of the university’s Governing Council after Professor Obamuyi emerged as the highest-ranked candidate among 15 applicants interviewed by the institution’s Joint Council and Senate Selection Board.
The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, announced the appointment in a statement issued on Friday.
Professor Obamuyi, a professor of Banking and Finance, succeeds Professor Olugbenga Ige, whose tenure as Vice-Chancellor has come to an end.
According to the statement, the appointment was made in line with the provisions of the university’s governing laws and regulations.
Professor Obamuyi previously served as Head of the Department of Banking and Finance at AAUA and was the pioneer substantive Dean of the School of Management Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
He has received international recognition for his academic contributions, including the Best Professor of Banking and Finance in Africa Award in 2015 by the Africa Education Leadership Awards in Mauritius.
He has also participated in programme accreditation exercises for the National Universities Commission and served as Chairperson and Subject Expert on the Review Panel of Namibia’s National Council for Higher Education.
The statement noted that the incoming Vice-Chancellor has presented scholarly papers at conferences across Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia, reflecting his extensive international academic engagement.
Speaking on the appointment, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed confidence in Professor Obamuyi’s ability to build on the university’s achievements.
“Professor Obamuyi brings decades of academic excellence, administrative experience, and a strong record of research and institutional development. I am confident that his leadership will consolidate the gains already recorded by the university and further strengthen its teaching, research, and community service,” the governor said.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also urged the new Vice-Chancellor to uphold the institution’s core values while promoting peace, innovation, and collaboration among staff, students, and other stakeholders.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting Adekunle Ajasin University in maintaining its reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading state-owned universities.
