FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, has paid tribute to Lionel Messi following the Argentina captain’s retirement from international football.
Infantino shared a picture of himself with Messi holding the FIFA World Cup trophy, as he reflected on the Argentine forward’s remarkable career with the national team.
The FIFA president praised Messi for the unforgettable moments he produced throughout his international career and acknowledged the emotional reaction to his final appearance for Argentina.
“Congratulations, Messi, thank you very much! Argentine fans and Messi loyalists worldwide were incredibly emotional seeing you perform that timeless magic in the national team jersey for the last time! Good luck, legend,” Infantino wrote.
Messi, who has made a record 208 appearances for Argentina, leaves international football as a World Cup winner after leading the country to glory at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
The Inter Miami forward also helped Argentina win the Copa America, adding further silverware to a career that has established him as one of the greatest players in football history.
With his international career now over, Messi is expected to concentrate on his club commitments with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
