Nations League: Slovenia edge Scotland 2-1

Scotland suffered a 2-1 defeat to Slovenia in the Nations League on Tuesday, surrendering a half-time lead to leave head coach Sebastien Pocognoli still searching for his first victory at Hampden Park.

Ryan Christie put Scotland ahead in the 31st minute after Jack Hendry’s header struck the post, with the Bournemouth midfielder reacting quickly to backheel the rebound into the net.

Scotland went into the break ahead but struggled to maintain their advantage after the restart as Slovenia increased the pressure.

Aljosa Matko restored parity in the 57th minute when he raced through the Scotland defence before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Slovenia thought they had taken the lead when Matko found the net again, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

However, the visitors eventually completed the turnaround in the 72nd minute.

Matko turned provider this time, finding Danijel Sturm, who guided his finish past the Scotland goalkeeper to put Slovenia 2-1 ahead.

Scotland appealed unsuccessfully for two penalties late in the game after Findlay Curtis and Josh McPake went down inside the Slovenia box, but the referee waved play on both occasions.

The defeat leaves Scotland third in Group B1 with two matches remaining.

They will return to Nations League action in November against North Macedonia at home before travelling to face Switzerland.

Christie admitted afterwards that the result was frustrating, saying Scotland had failed to create enough despite having possession.

“It was nice to score but it feels a lot nicer when you win,” Christie told BBC Scotland. “We didn’t create enough tonight with the possession we had.”
