Former Chelsea captain, César Azpilicueta, has credited his 11-year spell at the club with helping him develop into a better footballer and leader.
Azpilicueta joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2012 for about £7m, arriving without the reputation of a major star.
However, his consistency, versatility and commitment gradually made him one of the club’s most dependable players.
The Spaniard started his career as a right winger before moving into defensive roles.
He subsequently featured at left-back, wing-back and centre-back, while also adapting to different managers and tactical systems during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking about his development, Azpilicueta said, “I had to find my way. It was about consistency. I had to work hard to stay fit, adapt to different managers and different positions.”
His time at Chelsea also saw him play alongside established figures including John Terry, Frank Lampard and Petr Cech, before eventually succeeding Terry and Gary Cahill as club captain.
Azpilicueta said the club’s high expectations and constant pursuit of trophies played a major role in pushing him to improve.
“When you arrive at Chelsea, you feel the ambition straight away. Every three days you have to win. Every game and every trophy matters,” he said.
“That culture pushed me to the maximum and, especially when I left Chelsea, I felt that I had given everything I had for the club.”
The former defender enjoyed the biggest success of his Chelsea career in 2021 when he captained the club to Champions League glory after a 1-0 victory over Manchester City.
Beyond football, Azpilicueta also invested in his education, completing business studies and later obtaining qualifications in football management and leadership.
He said his learning outside football contributed to his development as a leader and helped give him the confidence to represent fellow Premier League players during the COVID-19 pandemic.
After leaving Chelsea in 2023, Azpilicueta spent his final season at Sevilla before retiring from professional football.
Although he has been linked with a possible future in football administration, the former Spain international said he is currently enjoying life with his family.
Despite his departure from Stamford Bridge, Azpilicueta said his affection for Chelsea remains strong.
“I left Chelsea, but Chelsea will always stay in my heart,” he said. “I follow every game and I hope the club comes back to where it belongs.”
Azpilicueta also expressed confidence that Chelsea’s current players and manager can help the club return to its former level, while stressing that the demands associated with representing the club must remain high.
“At a big club like Chelsea, the demands are high. But I think that’s normal.
It should be demanding and ambitious because, speaking as a Chelsea fan, you always want to see the club winning trophies.”
