Two people are feared dead after suspected gunmen attacked a mining site around Kuru Jenta, near the boundary between Jos South and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly happened at about 11:30pm on Friday while the victims and other miners were at the site.
A community member, Weng Bulus, told journalists in Jos on Saturday that the victims were from Heipang District.
He said, “Two persons from Heipang District were shot dead by suspected gunmen at the mining site around Kuru Jenta last night.”
Bulus condemned the attack and urged residents to desist from mining activities at night, noting that the incident occurred during the curfew imposed by the state government.
He added, “Residents should remain vigilant and avoid movements during restricted hours. Engaging in night mining could expose people to serious security risks.”
Also condemning the incident, the spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Rwang Tengwong, called for a thorough investigation to identify those behind the attack.
“This killing is unfortunate. We condemn it in totality,” Tengwong said.
He added, “We call on security operatives to investigate the killing, identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”
Tengwong similarly advised miners and other residents to avoid operating at night, particularly during the curfew period.
Efforts to obtain confirmation from the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing the report, as his telephone was switched off.
