2027 election will test Nigeria’s democracy maturity – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to prioritise peace, unity and justice ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message as Nigeria marked 66 years of independence on Thursday.

The former president said the country’s next electoral cycle would be an important test of its democratic development, urging citizens to remain patriotic and committed to national unity.

He said, “In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice.”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence, Jonathan acknowledged the challenges the country has faced but said the resilience of its people had helped it overcome several difficulties.

He called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and united while working towards a more prosperous nation.

Jonathan also said Nigeria could achieve sustainable development by effectively harnessing its diversity and abundant human and natural resources.

He particularly appealed to young Nigerians to remain courageous and optimistic about the country’s future.

The former president, however, said achieving meaningful progress would require greater responsibility and sacrifice from leaders at all levels.

He urged political leaders to strengthen good governance, accountability and respect for the rule of law while addressing the country’s social and economic challenges.

Jonathan said, “Leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism.”

He added that leaders must prioritise personal sacrifice and accountability in their efforts to build a peaceful, secure and equitable Nigeria.

He said the years ahead offered significant possibilities if Nigerians could work together, protect national unity and channel the country’s resources towards sustainable development.
