‘Saved by the Bell’ actor Dennis Haskins dies at 75

American actor, Dennis Haskins, best known for playing Principal Richard Belding in the popular sitcom “Saved by the Bell,” has died at the age of 75.

Haskins’ death was confirmed by his agent, Jay Schachter, early Tuesday, although no further details about the cause of his death were immediately released.

“It’s a tragic loss,” Schachter said in a statement. “Everyone loved Mr. Belding and those of us who got to know Dennis, loved him even more. He was a great person, and he loved, I mean absolutely LOVED his fans. He always had time for them, no matter what. He was my client and dear friend for over 20 years, and I will miss him terribly. I’m heartbroken.”

Haskins portrayed Belding on “Saved by the Bell,” which ran from 1989 to 1993 and followed the comic adventures of students at the fictional Bayside High School in Southern California.

The sitcom, which was known for its unusual storylines and youthful cast, often depicted the students as having more influence over the school than their principal.

Following news of his death, Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle on the series, paid tribute to Haskins in an Instagram post.

“Knowing Dennis Haskins for almost 40 years has been one of the truest blessings of my life, which makes losing him hurt so deeply,” she wrote.

“We shared so much history together from our earliest days, and through it all, he remained a fabulous person, a loyal friend, and someone with such a kind, gentle heart.”

Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Haskins developed an interest in acting during his school years.

According to a biography from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, he was active in the school’s drama club and helped establish a community theatre group.

Before becoming a familiar face on television, Haskins worked as a music manager, agent and concert promoter, with clients including Tom Jones and Gregg Allman.

He later appeared in guest roles on television series including “The Twilight Zone” and “Magnum, P.I.” during the 1980s before landing the role that would make him widely recognised as Principal Belding.
