Residents of Enwan Community in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State have raised concerns over the overflow of the Ojirami Dam, following heavy rainfall that flooded homes, businesses and roads in the area.
According to The Punch, the flooding reportedly destroyed a palm oil mill and affected a poultry farm, while students were unable to attend school and farmers were prevented from accessing their farms.
Several businesses were also forced to close as floodwater spread across the community.
The rain, which reportedly began around 6am, caused the dam to overflow, while erosion worsened the condition of major roads in the community.
Houses and business premises were also affected by the rising water.
The owner of the affected poultry farm, Monday John, said the flooding had destroyed his means of livelihood after 1,400 birds were killed.
“That is my house. I have poultry. The flood took over everywhere and killed 1,400 of my birds. The rain began at 6 am and I woke up to see water everywhere. The government should talk to the water board people. They should tell them when to release water,” he added.
Another resident, Chief John Omaze, said the flood entered his home, destroying his belongings and palm oil mill.
“Flood destroyed my palm oil mill. Our children could not go to school, and many people did not go to the farm.”
A resident identified as Ehis expressed concern that the situation could worsen if the dam eventually collapses, urging the state government to intervene before a major disaster occurs.
“The government must take action now. If the dam collapses, the effect might be far-reaching as communities will be submerged,” he added.
