Nations League: Ukraine hold Georgia to goalless draw

Ukraine maintained their unbeaten start to the UEFA Nations League with a 0-0 draw against Georgia in Group B2 at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena on Monday.

Ukraine created the first clear opportunity after four minutes, but Matviy Ponomarenko’s effort from inside the box went narrowly wide.

Georgia gradually grew into the game, with Giorgi Chakvetadze forcing Ukraine goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin into a fine save with a long-range effort after 20 minutes.

Saba Goglichidze then headed over from the resulting corner.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the first half, but Ukraine finished strongly before the break.

Oleksandr Zubkov tested Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili with a shot from outside the box shortly before half-time.

The second half began cautiously, with neither side creating much until Trubin again came to Ukraine’s rescue in the 64th minute, denying Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from close range at an acute angle.

Ukraine substitute Oleg Ocheretko later forced Mamardashvili into a comfortable save with a 20-yard effort, while Kvaratskhelia’s late attempt was also kept out by Trubin as both teams settled for a point.

The result leaves Georgia with one point from their opening two Group B2 matches, while Ukraine continue their unbeaten start.
